Check Out My Video Book Trailer: “Ten Ways to be ‘Happier at Home.'”

Ta-da! Here’s the one-minute video for my new book, Happier at Home, on “Ten ways to be happier at home.” Some of the “ways” are serious; some are a bit goofy.

Thanks so much to Chris Gelles who created it.

What do you think? What strategies would you add?

If seeing this book trailer made you think, “Goodness, Gretchen, I want to pre-order Happier at Home right this minute,” then here are the links you need! Pre-orders are a big help to me, so thanks for pre-ordering.

If you want to know more about the book, you can…

read about it;

listen to an excerpt from the audio-book;

sample an excerpt from the chapter on “Time.”

  • Yay Gretchen!

I love the trailer, and I’m super excited about your next bestseller.

Signing off to look for purple around my home office…

    • gretchenrubin

Aww, thanks Chris! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed it.

  • Wow Gretchen!!

That was soo good! Question though, how come purple helps? I’ve never heard of that before.

Anyway, thanks for the fun clip.

I just think that every room should contain something purple. Just because. My idiosyncratic Secret of Adulthood.

In her book, “The Perfectly Imperfect Home,” Deborah Needleman said that “every room should have a little bit of ugly.” I love that, too.

      • Beautiful! Will definitely take that advice and get my Ugly on!

haha, have a great week Gretchen.

      • Nicole

I’ve heard of every room needing white – purple is … interesting? LOVED the video!

      • elisa freschi

What about “every room should contain something of your favourite colour”? It goes more in the direction of “knowing oneself”, which is probably the key secret to happiness…

      • Theresa

Purple is my favorite color so it is in every room of my house except my living room. I just haven’t found the right purple thing to put there. (I do have a purple blanket to cuddle with on the couch but it doesn’t count since it’s not a focal point.) I love this! To me, it’s comforting to be surrounded by purple. I just feel better when I’m near the color purple.

  • Rachel

I am really looking forward to your new book! I noticed the pre-order page shows Kathe Mazur as the reader for the audiobook. Will you be narrating a version at some point? I loved you as the reader on The Happiness Project!

(I’m sorry if you’ve already addressed this point in a previous post…)

    • gretchenrubin

Thanks so much! I decided that for this book, listeners would probably appreciate hearing a professional reader, so I read at the beginning and the end, and Kathe Masur does the rest.

  • Tj Ragan

This is exciting! I can’t wait to read Happier at Home!

    • gretchenrubin

Thanks! I hope you enjoy it.

  • Whitney P.

I’m really looking forward to reading your new book. I’m almost finished with The Happiness Project, and it has really given me a lot to think about. Keep up the great work! (That can be your gold star for the day!) 🙂

    • gretchenrubin

And you KNOW how I love those gold stars.

  • I liked the one minute video! Great job! I’m reading the Happiness Project now and can’t wait to read Happier at Home.

    • gretchenrubin

Terrific! I hope you enjoy it.

  • Susan B.

Hi Gretchen, But what if a bit of purple is not fun for me?? (Actually I do like purple – so much that I once painted a bookcase purple. Which turned out to be a mistake.) I like the trailer – nice, lively, upbeat music and graphics.

  • Carla

I absolutely loved the trailer! Fantastically done!

    • gretchenrubin

Awww, thanks! Chris Gelles is really terrific.

I can’t wait to read this; pre-ordered at Amazon and it’s just what I need (plus I still love starting a project at “back to school” time even though I’ve been out of school for 17 years :), Why purple??

    • gretchenrubin

      Terrific! thanks so much.

      Purple…the ring of truth!

  • I get your daily email quotes and just love them and have THE HAPPINESS PROJECT on my to-read shelf, but haven’t opened it up yet. I am starting it tonight. Your little video just made me cry and I want to read Happier at Home but want to read your first book first. It isn’t that I am not happy, but I could be happier and maybe this will help me find it. I too love purple (my room growing up was purple) and it made me smile and want to find something purple for each room now. I also LOVE Christmas ornaments and love giving them as gifts…finding one that means something to the receiver. My children each get an ornament each year that symbolizes something they love or a memory from that year. Thanks for your daily encouragement. I’m off to start a new book…..

    • gretchenrubin

I’m thrilled to hear that my work resonates with you.

  • Bixie

Orange is my Purple! I loved the Happiness Project so much I donated a copy to my local library here in the UK . I cant wait for Happier at Home as I love being at home!

    • gretchenrubin

Orange is the other purple – I agree!. Thanks so much for your kind words.

  • Alison

The new trailer is enchanting Gretchen. Had an omg moment when I saw your tip that everything looks better on a tray. I was sick and tired of walking backwards and forwards from our garden to our kitchen this summer carrying food and plates etc and I suddenly decided to put it all on a tray. So I bought a new tray with fabulous pink flamingos on which is a bit kitsch but my little girl loves it everytime I get it out. Now I can really enjoy eating outside as I’m not up and down all the time, I’ve created more time and there is something lovely about the ceremony of a tray. This tip is top!

    • gretchenrubin

I’m so thrilled you like it! and I agree, just funny about the power of a tray.

  • Rachel

I would love to win a copy of the new book–thanks for having a giveaway! But what are the rules? Does a person have to enter each day to be included in the drawing for that particular day? Or are names drawn from the entire pool of people who have entered at any time?

    • gretchenrubin

The name is drawn each day, so yes, you have to enter each day you want to be included.

  • Natalie Currie

Happiness does start at home. Two tips that I would add: 1. cook/eat dinner together 2. and as I like to say a pet makes a house a home. I can’t wait to read the book Gretchen!

  • aa

I love the trailer. Another way to be happier at home that comes to mind as I watch it is: listen to happy music!

  • john parikhal

Hi Gretchen. Great video. I was so impressed I went to Chris Gelles’ site. You might want to tell him that clicking on ‘news’ generates a #404 page error

    • gretchenrubin

Thanks for letting me know – I’ll pass that along. Glad you like the video!

  • Rubber Duckie

congratulations Gretchen im looking forward to the release. Sad to hear your audio book isnt read by you but im sure you have a good reason 🙂 all the best for the relese

    • gretchenrubin

Ah, thanks! I thought listeners might prefer a professional reader this time. I do read at the beginning at the end. It’s really fun (and a bit odd!) to do the recording.

      • Rubber Duckie

Its funny, i guess for others that haven’t listen to your other books it would be normal but it is quite strange the difference in pauses and hearing your very own truths from someone different . I will still buy it , but know that i for sure thought that your other audiobooks were read like a professional. I think you would be surprised at how many people would buy your voice recording over someone Else’s . Its cos your such a star 😉 wonderful news how well your book is doing .

  • Great, light-hearted trailer – definitely achieves the goal of enticing me to read more! I’m so glad I pre-ordered the book, so its there waiting for me when I finish ‘The Happiness Project’… I am immediately adding ‘ensure all rooms should contain something purple’ to my next actions list @happiness. 🙂

This is also a good reminder to check in here more often… you offer a lot of inspiration to everyone through this website! Thank you Gretchen!

    • gretchenrubin

Thanks so much for those kind words! And I hope you enjoy Happier at Home.

  • Loved that trailer. We have a ‘family color’….and try to incorporate it throughout our lives, so I’m pro-purple! This is such an inspiring idea for a book. I like the thought of trying to live our lives better-happier.

  • surendra

i am gong to be a follower after seeing the trailor of your book the “tray tip” is a micro tip with MACRO meaning behind. I can just say Thank u!!! skb

  • olee22

Great trailer, made me interested! I like the serious and goofy together! 🙂 Sometimes the goofy turns into serious, and the serious turns into goofy…

  • Ana Aguilera

Great Video! It made me smile~ can’t wait to share it.
P.S. You’re dead on with the color Purple.
