The Restatement of Love is a serious spoof which Rubin wrote with her law-school roommate. A “restatement” is a legal reference book that explains the law in a general area, such as “The Restatement of Contracts” or “The Restatement of Torts.” Rubin and Heller applied legal concepts—like prescriptive easement and constructive eviction—to romance. Though the contrast between the stuffy, lawyerly language and the topic is comical, “The Restatement of Love” is a thoughtful examination of the laws governing courtship and love. It was published in the Yale Law Journal, 104 Yale L.J. 707 (1994).
