A Little Happier: Sometimes, the Best Solution Is To Do Nothing at All.

My mother made this observation about an air-conditioner vent, but I’ve found that it’s widely applicable: Sometimes, the best solution is to do nothing at all.

In the photo, you can see the vent. What do you think — were we right not to worry about a vent cover? I never notice the vent, but then again, it’s true that I almost never notice that kind of thing.

Have you ever realized that instead of coming up with some complex solution, you could just…do nothing? It’s astonishing to me how often this works.

The wallpaper looks lovely! Before I knew that it would figure into the post, I looked at the picture and thought, “What a lovely wall treatment!” In fact, I noticed the walls before I noticed the vent, which I only looked at because you mentioned it in the text. I’ll bet it’s the same with any visitors you have; they notice the beauty of the walls before they even glance at the vent… which they may not do at all, unless you bring it to their attention. Your mom was right.

YES, oh goodness, this is something that I go through with the husband continuously. He is very apt to come up with complex solutions to problems I never even realized existed. Its one of my life goals to talk him back down into “doing nothing”. I don’t always succeed unfortunately, and sometimes he just does it without discussing it with me first. Its totally fine if that’s how he wants to spend his time, but please don’t complain to me about being tired or too busy when you bring it on yourself!
I agree that the uncovered vent goes unnoticed with the rest of the elegant and ornate surroundings.
