Recently, I’ve been fascinated by learning about artist Theo Jansen’s “Strandbeests”—wind-powered sculptures that stride along the beach. In their elegance and purposefulness, they really look like creatures created by nature.

In thinking of the immense, god-like pleasure that must come from fashioning those figures, I was reminded of two quotations that haunt me, by two writers I admire tremendously.

A mysterious observation from Iris Murdoch’s novel A Severed Head:

“The best thing about being God would be making the heads.”

A beautiful passage from Marilynne Robinson’s novel Home:

“And there was the oak tree in front of the house, much older than the neighborhood or the town, which made rubble of the pavement at its foot and flung its imponderable branches out over the road and across the yard, branches whose girths were greater than the trunk of any ordinary tree. There was a torsion in its body that made it look like a giant dervish to them. Their father said if they could see as God can, in geological time, they would see it leap out of the ground and turn in the sun and spread its arms and bask in the joys of being an oak tree in Iowa.”

5 Things Making Me Happy

I’m always looking for examples of creativity in everyday life—such as tablescapes. My sister Elizabeth, and many people, have fun creating beautiful tablescapes. I was astonished by the creativity that takes the tablescape approach even further, with “fridgescapes.” A reader created this “fridgescape,” which introduced me to the idea. Framed photos! Tiny vases of flowers! Banners and figurines! People’s creative ingenuity astonishes me.

Is one of your 2024 aims to practice better and more mindful consumption of news and other media? If so, consider Nice News. It’s a daily email series and website on a mission to re-envision how people interact with their daily news feed. They filter through 100+ sources each day to uncover the most uplifting, relevant, and entertaining news stories. Nice News is a way to engage with news that allows us to view the world through a more optimistic lens.

One quick, easy thing I do to boost connection with my husband Jamie is to send notes, updates, and photos of our dog Barnaby throughout the day. I was amused to discover that people compare this practice to the penguin behavior called “pebbling.”

To help us remember all our experiences during our hiking adventure through England, on our last evening together, Elizabeth and I created a five-senses portrait:

  • Seeing: Hadrian’s Wall—something I’ve wanted to see ever since reading The Eagle of the Ninth and Memoirs of Hadrian
  • Hearing: The scrunching of rain pants and rain jackets
  • Smelling: The sharp smell of vinegar on fish and chips
  • Tasting: Very sweet, minty taste of Kendal’s Mint Cake on the summit of Cat Bells
  • Touching: Velvety lamb’s ear leaf in the walled garden near Lindisfarne Castle (one of my favorite textures)

Read the whole five-senses portrait and our other tips and insights in my latest article.

I’m not a big fan of sports—playing them or watching them on TV—but I love the fact that across the world, people are interested in the Olympics. It’s great to have these opportunities to come together.
