5 Things Making Me Happy
For some reason, I laugh to myself whenever I remember this little exchange. When my parents were visiting from Kansas City, my father and I visited the Metropolitan Museum together. While we were looking at paintings by Vermeer, we wanted to talk about that device that some painters use…what was the name of it? I was driven bonkers by the tip-of-the-tongue feeling. I came up with mirabile dictu and tabula rasa before I finally remembered: camera obscura. What a relief.
As mentioned, I’m writing about my experience of the open-door phase, and I was fascinated by the article “Helicopter U.: How it feels to be a college student whose parents can’t let go.” Technology is permitting kinds of connections that weren’t possible in the past, and we’re all trying to figure out how to set the right boundaries.
In the truly frivolous category: I’d been reading about how no-show socks are out of style, so I asked my daughter Eliza to coach me on sock-wearing. She bought me a few pairs of the right kind, and I wore a pair to an event. When I came home, my husband Jamie was sure I was kidding him when I told him that yes, I’d worn them as part of my outfit. My two daughters rushed to my defense.

I recently recorded a podcast episode with the brilliant Laurie Santos, of the Happiness Lab podcast, and she told me about an interesting organization, Giving Multiplier. “Give to both your favorite charity and a super-effective charity recommended by experts. We’ll add to your donations.” Do good, feel good—it really works, and it’s one of the nicest things about human nature.
I just voted! Because I’m traveling so much during the next several weeks, I decided it would be safest for me to vote early and mail in my ballot. It’s a great feeling. If you’re still figuring out your voting plan, HeadCount is a great resource.
