5 Things to Try This Month

 1

Schedule a “Sour Hour.”

Similar to suggestions to “Schedule time to worry” or “Plan a ‘Power Hour’ for dreaded tasks,” you can set yourself a limited time to reflect on your grudges or annoyances.

 2

To spark creativity, set a demand.

By creating a demand that has to be met, we can foster creativity. You might start a podcast, blog, or newsletter as a way to nudge yourself to come up with ideas, or host a party to nudge yourself into decorating or cooking.

 3

Gamify clutter clearing.

On separate pieces of paper, write down different areas of your home, put the papers in a hat, and draw one at random. Whatever area you pick gets your attention for cleaning and organizing. This method helps reduce decision fatigue and distraction when choosing where to focus your efforts.

 4

List your quirks.

As a way to know yourself better, list 24 characteristics, idiosyncrasies, behaviors, or interests that make you unique. Not biographical details (I’m from Kansas City) but idiosyncrasies (I love children’s literature). This exercise may help you find ways to cultivate an identity that’s important to you.

 5

Identify different delights for each day of the week.

Look for or create small delights or treats that make each day of the week special. Research shows that we can change our experience by directing our attention, so noticing everyday pleasures can give us a happiness boost. If you’re like my husband Jamie, you might celebrate Ice-Cream Saturday—or you can drink from a special mug on Sundays, celebrate TV Tuesday, or enjoy a podcast that drops every week on a particular day (I listen to Happier in Hollywood on Thursdays).
