Podcast 185: Make a “Facts of Life” Book, Ideas for a Clutter-Related Conflict, and a New Way to Tell Left from Right.

Try This at Home: Make a "Facts of Life" book.

What other kinds of information should a Facts of Life book include?

Happiness Hack: Like many people (I was surprised to learn how common this is), I have a bit of trouble telling left from right. This challenge can be especially annoying when I'm driving, and someone is telling me where to turn.

Solution: instead of saying "left" or "right," say "driver's side" or "passenger side."

Happiness Stumbling Block: Do you suffer from "first time fears?

Listener Question: An Obliger wants to nudge her Questioner husband into dealing with boxes from his father's estate, which have remained unpacked for three years.

Two of my favorite subjects combined: the Four Tendencies and outer order!

Don't know if you're an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel? Take the new-and-improved quiz here.

Gretchen's Demerit: As I was helping my daughter Eliza get her (extremely large and heavy) luggage onto the train for the move to her sophomore year of college, I was so focused that I simply couldn't engage with a friend I saw. I wasn't rude, but I wasn't friendly!

Elizabeth's Gold Star: Knowing that Sarah has given up sugar for the year, the office of The Fix surprised her on her birthday with shots of green juice instead of cake.

Bonus: Welcome to our new producer, Cameron Drews!

  1. Want to sign up for my free newsletter? Every month, I send a short email with interesting links, images, bonus materials, and so on. More than 700,000 people get it.
  2. So many people requested the 12-point Habits Manifesto bookmark! I was astonished by how many people requested these bookmarks, which I created for the publication of my book Better Than Before. I ran out of bookmarks, so my publisher agreed to create more of these—so now I have plenty, and they're spiffed up. Request them by emailing Sorry, due to mailing costs I can send them to U.S. and Canada only.

I do a weekly live show on Facebook called: “Ask Gretchen Rubin Live.” To join the conversation, check the schedule.
