Podcast 142: Schedule Some Daily Transcendence, Skip the Bad Parts, and a Conversation with Lewis Howes

Update: As a little treat, "Happier" subscribers will get a bonus episode, episode 310, of Chris Guillebeau's "Side Hustle School" podcast. We think this great story of a side hustle, and how it boosted happiness, will resonate with our listeners. But remember, if you want to listen to more "Side Hustle School" episodes, you need subscribe. This is just a one-time thing.

Try This at Home: Schedule some daily transcendence. One popular way: daily transcendent readings.

We mention my "Moment of Happiness" free email newsletter -- each day, I send out a quotation about happiness or human nature. Sign up here. Elizabeth also mentions my Happier 2018 Page-a-Day Calendar.

Elizabeth said she'd like to read a poem every day. Here's one way: sign up for the Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor to get a poem each day, plus literary and historical notes from this day in history.

Of course, we have to mention Oprah Winfrey's new book, The Wisdom of Sundays: Life-Changing Insights from Super Soul Conversations -- Elizabeth and I got to go to the book party at Oprah's house. Yowza.

Here's what Flannery O'Connor had to say about reading National Geographic magazine as a child:

A cousin gave me a subscription when I was a child as she noted I always made for it at her house, but it wasn’t a literary or even a geographical interest. It has a distinct unforgettable transcendent apotheotic (?) and very grave odor. Like no other mere magazine.

Happiness Hack: Skip the bad parts!

Interview: Elizabeth and I talked to Lewis Howes. He's well-known for his bestselling book and wildly popular podcast "The School of Greatness." When I was in Los Angeles recently, I was a guest on his podcast -- such a fun conversation. Lewis is also a former professional football player and two-sport All American.

He has a new book that just hit the shelves, called The Mask of Masculinity: How Men Can Embrace Vulnerability, Create Stronger Relationships, and Live Their Fullest Lives.

Note: Lewis talks about some tough subjects during this conversation, and his interview may not be appropriate for children.

Elizabeth's Demerit: Elizabeth wasn't using the treadmill, because the TV was broken, and she exercised while watching TV. But now the TV is working again, and she's still not back on the treadmill.

Gretchen's Gold Star: I give a gold star to my daughter Eliza for being so relaxed and welcoming during Parents' Weekend.

Quote From the Podcast

It can sound sort of funny to schedule something like transcendence, but I think in the chaos of everyday life, it can be easy to lose track of the transcendent eternal values and thinking at a higher level. And for me, if it's not on the calendar, it doesn't happen.
